On 21 May 2024, IAF published Issue 2 of IAF MD 16 Application of ISO/IEC 17011 for the Accreditation of Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS) Certification Bodies. This document is mandatory for the consistent application of ISO/IEC 17011:2017 Conformity assessment – Requirements for accreditation bodies accrediting conformity assessment bodies for scoping the accreditation of FSMS certification bodies.

The document identifies the activities that an accreditation body will undertake to assess the competence of a conformity assessment body in the food chain categories identified in Annex A of ISO 22003-1:2022 Food Safety Management Systems – Part 1: Requirements for bodies providing audit and certification of food safety management systems. The main purpose of this revision was to update the document for ISO 22003-1:2022, as Issue 1, Version 3 was aligned with ISO/TS 22003:2013.

In accordance with IAF MD 27:2023 Transition Requirements for ISO 22003-1:2022, the transition period from ISO/TS 22003:2013 to ISO 22003-1:2022 will end on 30 June 2025. Issue 1, Version 3 of MD 16 will be removed from the IAF website following the end of the transition period.
